10 Engagement Photo Outfit Tips
Picking an outfit for your engagement photos can feel like a hard decision…but it doesn’t have to be! Here are 10 tips for you and your partner to keep in-mind when deciding what to wear for your photoshoot:
1. Solid, muted, neutral colors work in any environment and always look great in photos. Good go-to neutral colors include white, black, brown, grey, navy, maroon, dark orange, and muted green
2. You and your partner’s outfits should be coordinated and complimenting, but not totally matching
3. Avoid any clothing that has large logos or graphics
4. Interesting details and textures - such as ruffles, lace, slight textures, etc - are a subtle way to help make an outfit look more striking
5. Patterns can be really fun and compelling! But if you’re going to wear a piece with a pattern, make sure the pattern is large and not too busy. Avoid small patterns - such as thin stripes - because they generally don’t photograph well
6. Only one person should wear a pattern in their outfit, otherwise the patterns will compete for attention and take focus away from you and your partner as the subjects of the photos
7. Layering outfits with a jacket, cardigan, or shall is an easy way to level-up your outfit. This works especially great if you use a solid layer to break up a patterned outfit (or vice versa)
8. Having an accent piece or accessory in at least one of your outfits adds the right amount of intrigue. Examples that work well are patterned layers, cool-looking shoes, belts, scarves, sunglasses, purses, suspenders, jewelry/necklaces, etc.
9. Wear your makeup in a look that you’d normally wear it, and that you know accents you in a way you’re comfortable. Playing around with different looks is fun, but an engagement session isn’t the right place to test out an entirely new makeup style for the first time
10. Wear clothing that feels comfortable and authentic to you, and is something you would actually wear outside of the shoot too
And always remember, if you have questions or need additional guidance, you should reach out to your photographer! Our number one job is to make sure you end up with photos that you love, and having an outfit your love is part of that.
